Water is central to our lives and has always been necessary for the survival of all living creatures. A água é relevante para a sobrevivência de todos os seres vivos.

In this film spoken in English,a woman comes to a well to fetch water for herself, but Jesus asks her to give Him water. She questions the request. A conversation evolves, where Jesus brings up the word WATER in a sense that is unknown to the Samaritan woman: that of LIVING WATER. One of the things we take for granted is the ability to go to the faucet, turn it on, and drink or use the water that comes out of it: clean water. Water - Earth Water Sheets threatened in the Mediterranean

Água: Muitas reservas subterrâneas estão ameaçadas no Mediterrâneo - UNESCO

pela poluição e sobre-exploração, em particular no Mediterrâneo, alertou hoje a UNESCO, que publicou a primeira carta mundial de aquíferos.

Cerca de 96 por cento da água doce do planeta encontra-se nas bacias subterrâneas, sendo que a esmagadora maioria é partilhada pelo menos por dois países, revela a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, Ciência e Cultura (UNESCO), com sede em Paris.

Segundo a Carta, existem no mundo 273 aquíferos transfronteiriços: 68 no continente americano, 38 em África, 65 na Europa Oriental, 90 na Europa Ocidental e 12 na Ásia.

"Apesar de existirem em todos os continentes, nem todos os sistemas aquíferos são todos renováveis", alerta a UNESCO.

"Mesmo os que são renováveis, isto é, alimentados regularmente pela chuva, estão ameaçados em certas regiões pela sobre-exploração ou poluição", acrescenta a organização, referindo pequenas ilhas e zonas costeiras do Mediterrâneo.

As bacias subterrâneas, situadas em África, ainda largamente sub-exploradas, representam um potencial considerável se for "adaptada uma gestão durável dos seus recursos", defende a UNESCO.

É preciso incitar os países a não causarem danos nos aquíferos, a cooperarem ou a prevenirem e controlarem a poluição das reservas de água, pois os aquíferos representam um volume 100 vezes superior à água doce existente na superfície da Terra.

Deles se extrai 70 por cento da água utilizada na União Europeia. Em países áridos, a percentagem é ainda maior: 100 por cento na Arábia Saudita ou Malta, 95 por cento na Tunísia e 75 por cento em Marrocos.

As bacias subterrâneas têm também um peso particularmente importante nos recursos hídricos empregues na rega, representando o seu uso 90 por cento na Líbia, 89 por cento na Índia, 84 por cento na África do Sul e 80 por cento em Espanha.

Coping with water scarcity - The challenge of the 21st century Enfrentando a escassez de água - O desafio do século XXI
The United Nations, at its 58th session, proclaimed 2005 to 2015 as the International Decade for Action - Water for Life. This recommendation calls for a greater focus on water-related issues and for actions to ensure participation in water-related development efforts to achieve water-related goals: to halve by 2015 the proportion of people who are unable to reach or afford safe drinking water and who do not have access to basic sanitation.As Nações Unidas, na sua 58ª sessão,proclamou os anos de 2005 a 2015 como a Década da Acção - Água para Vida. Esta recomendação vem dar maior relevo a questões da água e a iniciativas que assegurem a participação em esforços que visem atingirem-se os alvos delineados para a área da água:descer para metade, até 2015, a proporção de pessoas que não têm acesso a água potável ou a saneamento básico.

This year, it included a pavilion by the evangelical community in Spain called "Living Water." The name of the Pavilion comes from a New Testament text: Talk of Jesus to the Samaritan Woman, Gospel of John, chapter 4.
